Bow Window Basics

Bow windows are a combination of 3, 4, 5 or 6 or more windows that are mulled or placed together in a subtle curve - think of the curve of a bow as in bow and arrow. It is a more subtle shape than bay windows, which are very similar in both size, shape and cost. Bow windows create a unique space that is often used as a viewing area or simply a focal point of a room. This is a complex project as far as a single opening for a replacement window goes. They are often compared to a bay window, although bow windows can be larger and therefore more complicated to install.

Popular Frames For Bow Windows

Similar to other window styles, bow windows can be produced using any number of frame materials. Vinyl or a fiberglass material is probably the most common on the exterior as it provides long term protection from the elements. Wood interiors are the most beautiful and most expensive material. The vinyl or fiberglass composite can also be used on the inside and can look quite nice given a nice finish and color to the material.

Cost Of Bow Windows

Bow windows are expensive, unless you are talking a prefab set up, which is the most affordable option. The overall cost of a bow window will depend on a number of factors such as the type of frame material used, size of the project, glass package selected, type of hardware, upgrades and finishes on frames and the level of complexity for the installation.

Cost Of The Windows Themselves (4): $1,000 to $3,500

Installation Cost: $600 to $1,500

Completed Project Total: $1,600 to $5,000
